About Wedmore Harvest Home

Wedmore Harvest Home has a rich history stretching back over eighty years.
The tradition of Harvest Home was mentioned in Thomas Hardy's
Far From the Madding Crowd,
set in 19th Century Dorset. It had become the custom, even then, for farm-owners to provide a feast for their
labourers when the harvest had been safely gathered and brought
home.
In the mid nineteenth century, farming was a labour-intensive industry. Slowly, down the years,
agriculture became increasingly mechanised to the point where the work-force required to run a farm
in the current age is but a fraction of that required two hundred years ago.
Harvest Homes have changed with the times too, and so we provide a range of entertainments for
people from all ages and walks of life.
We have not forgotten our agricultural roots, however,
and once you have installed yourself in the marquee for luncheon, this will become obvious.
We are always looking for contributions, be they memories or photographs, that we can publish
here.
